Sell an app subscription with programs members pick

The whole setup from start to finish, so someone can buy a subscription to your app, get the app invite by email and choose from the programs you have made available.

How to sell your app on its own. A buyer pays a subscription from your store and is emailed an invite to the app straight away. Inside the app they pick a program from the ones you chose and run it themselves, with no coaching from you. This guide covers every step, in order.

Five things make this work: Stripe connected, the programs members can pick, a store, a self-serve offer with a price, and that offer switched to Live. You do not need to choose a group or build an onboarding flow.

Before you start

Connect Stripe under Settings → Integrations. A store cannot take payments until Stripe has finished verifying your account. See Connect Stripe.

Choose the programs members can pick

  1. Open Programs.
  2. Switch Available to members on for each program you want in the library.
  3. Check the list under Members → Programs. It shows every program that is switched on.

Set up your store

  1. Open Marketing. Offers & store is the first tab.
  2. Click Set up store. Skip this if you already have one.
  3. Check the Title and the Link, then click Save.

Write the offer

  1. Click New offer and give it a Name, such as App subscription.
  2. Under Coached, choose Online. Who they become only appears for online offers.
  3. Leave Collected by on Stripe. Only Stripe offers can be sold online.
  4. Under Sold as, choose Subscription.
  5. Under Who they become, choose Self-serve member.
  6. Leave Program they start when they buy on None so buyers choose for themselves in the app. Pick a program only if you want everyone to start on the same one; they can still swap from the library afterwards.
  7. Leave Add buyers to groups as it is. The built-in Members group is ticked for you and cannot be changed here.
  8. Scroll down to the Price card and fill in Price per period. This is required, and the offer will not save without it.
  9. Choose how often it is Billed every, and leave Video calls per period on 0.
  10. Optional: use First payment for a trial rate or a one-off fee, and Include transaction fees in the price to build the fees into the price.
  11. Click Create offer at the top, then All offers to go back to the list.

Put it on sale

  1. Find the offer in the list and switch Live on.
  2. Leave In store on to list it on your store page, or switch it off so only people with the link can find it.
  3. Copy your store link, or the Offer link under the offer, and share it.

Do I need a group?

No. Every client is always in one of the two built-in groups, so nobody ends up with no group. Anyone who buys a self-serve offer goes into Members by themselves, and that group decides what their app shows:

  • On by default: Vault, Nutrition and the program library. The Vault also needs to be switched on under Resources.
  • Off by default: Chat and Check-ins, because nobody is coaching them.

They do not get every feature. To change what all members get, open My Clients → Groups and edit Members. To add a feature for only some buyers, make your own group and tick it on the offer under Add buyers to groups. See Client groups and app features.

Do I need an onboarding flow?

Not for the app invite. It is emailed when the first payment lands, whether or not there is a flow. A flow only adds further steps after that.

Your usual default flow is not used for self-serve buyers, because it is written for people you coach. To give members their own, open My Clients → Onboarding, click New flow, choose Member onboarding and click Turn on. It asks the intake questions, takes starting photos, sets a weigh-in and sends a push two days in, with nothing about messaging you. To use a different flow for one offer, choose it under After they pay, start.

What the buyer gets

  1. They open your store or the offer link, fill in their name and email, and pay through Stripe.
  2. When the first payment lands, their plan goes Active and they appear under Members.
  3. They are emailed an invite with an App Store link, a Google Play link and a one-time code. The code lasts 14 days.
  4. They install the app and enter their email and the code.
  5. On their home screen they open Programs library, read about each program and start one from the date and on the training days they choose. The next blocks arrive by themselves.

After they join

Their access follows their payments without you doing anything. If a payment fails they are emailed a link to fix it, and reminded 2 days later if it is still unpaid. They can manage or cancel their own subscription from the app. See Payments and access in The Members tab.

Test it before you share it

Buy it yourself with an email address that is not already one of your clients. If the email belongs to an existing client, the plan goes on that client: someone you still coach stays Coached with the program library added, and someone marked Cancelled becomes a member. You get a notification either way. Someone who already has the app does not get a new invite either.

If it is not working

  • "Price per period must be more than $0" when creating the offer. The price is empty. The form takes you to the first field that needs fixing and marks it in red.
  • Who they become is missing. The offer is set to In person. Choose Online.
  • The group list only shows Members or Coached. That is expected. You only see more once you make your own groups under My Clients → Groups.
  • A member says the library is empty. No program has Available to members switched on, or the library is switched off for them under App features on their profile.
  • A buyer paid but did not get the email. Check Members to see that their plan is active, then send the invite again from their profile.
