Recipes and custom foods
Save the meals you prescribe again and again as recipes, and add any food the library is missing.
How to build a recipe library in TrainerStack with photos, method, servings and dietary tags, drop recipes into meal plans and scale them to a client's targets, and add custom foods with per-100 g nutrition from a label. Everything that feeds the meal plan builder.
The meal plan builder's Add food searches the built-in library, Australian food composition data and your own Custom Foods. Add recipe searches your Recipes. Both libraries live under Nutrition in the sidebar and are shared across every client and template.
Build a recipe
- Open Nutrition → Recipes and click + New recipe.
- Add cover to upload a photo. The client sees it in their app.
- Enter the Recipe name, an optional Description, and the Instructions / method, one step per line.
- Set Servings. Macros are stored for the whole recipe and shown per serving.
- Tag it with a Course, Cuisine, Protein and Dietary tags such as gluten free or vegan. Tags power the filters in the picker and the dietary chips on each recipe card.
- Under Ingredients, click + Add food and search the library. Enter grams, or use the stepper for foods sold in pieces.
- Click Save.
The macros roll up from the ingredients, so a recipe is only as accurate as the foods in it. Recipes marked Default come with TrainerStack; you can read and use them, and the All / Default / Mine filter separates them from your own.
Use a recipe in a plan
In the builder click Add recipe on a meal, search or filter, and pick one. It drops in at its original amounts, grouped under the recipe's name with its dietary chips showing once. Click Recalculate on the meal and the whole recipe scales to the meal's target, keeping its proportions. A recipe that is in a saved meal plan cannot be deleted until it is removed from the plan.
Add a custom food
- Open Nutrition → Custom Foods and click + Add food, or click Create a custom food inside the builder's picker when a search comes up empty.
- Enter the Name, optional Brand, and the Calories, Protein, Carbs and Fat from the label, choosing per 100 g or per 100 ml.
- If the food is eaten in pieces, fill in Sold in pieces?: Grams per piece, the Piece name, and whether it can be halved or quartered. Recalculate then keeps that food to whole pieces, or the halves and quarters you allow, instead of 37 g of egg.
- Click Save.
Custom foods appear in every picker alongside the library, and only you see them.
If it is not working
- I cannot find a branded product in the picker. The trainer picker does not search barcode databases. Add it as a custom food from the label.
- "This recipe is used in a meal plan — remove it there first." Take the recipe out of the plan, save the plan, then delete the recipe.
- A recipe shows the wrong macros. Check each ingredient's amount and that the servings count is right; per-serving figures divide the total by it.
- A food shows no allergen pill. No pill means nobody has assessed that food, not that it is safe. Packaged products still need their label checked.
- I cannot edit a Default recipe. Default recipes are read only. Rebuild it as your own recipe with the changes you want.
